MLM Marketing Tip #1 Billion: Why Free Traffic Really Isn’t Free

by Eric on April 28, 2010

I am getting a little red under the collar lately with people going on and on about free traffic strategies. Come on people, do you really not consider your time more valuable than money? If you spend 8 hrs a day wading through blog site after blog site and forum after forum and social media site after social media site, you haven’t wasted your time? Not completely, but the payoff isn’t as huge as some people like to make it out to be. There are several other MLM marketing strategies that produce superior results.

30, 50, 100 leads a day from Facebook, Right!? That might have been the case before the person that made that strategy packaged it up as a course and sold it to the masses. The reason the strategy worked so well was that very few people were doing. Fast forward and everyone and their brother is doing it so the effectiveness goes way down.

Now I am not saying there are not some places that I frequent that seem to pay dividends, but they are sites where my target market frequent and my message is well received. Even then, I might spend 30 minutes a day, total, on these sites.

Well, now that I’ve rained on 90% of the people’s parades who are on the “free” traffic band wagon, I should explain what is a better alternative for even newbies. Drum Roll please ………… Pay —- Per —- Click. I was talking with a business partner of mine, Jim Yaghi (yep the PPC king), and he brought up a really great point. The fastest way for people to start generating qualified leads and income is through PPC.

Instead of wasting hundreds or thousands of dollars on different courses, why not get a PPC course (say PPC Domination?) and start your traffic there. But, but, Eric, doesn’t it cost money to do PPC. Yes, but if you closely follow the teachings in courses like PPC Domination, you can limit your spending while still generating a steady, steady flow of qualified leads and income.

Once you are generating income from affiliate sales or primary business sales, then move into SEO, and then into these other traffic methods that show up as the wind blows.

I have been called crazy a time or two in my life, but this time I am calling myself smart. What is the main reason people quit the business? Not making any money, however, they will go and spend money hand over fist on the “next big thing course” hoping it will provide that magic bullet for leads and income. PPC has and will remain a great lead generator for anyone willing to get past the “it costs money” mindset. My PPC campaigns take 1, yes I said 1, hour per day to manage and that is it.

What do I do with all that extra time? Work on my SEO, articles, and blogging. I can do this knowing that at all times I have a steady flow of leads coming into my business and all the leads I generate from these other traffic methods are a bonus.

Work Smart, Not Harder!! I am in this business because I want time and financial freedom, not to create a J-O-B and waste time.

Let the stoning begin! MLM marketing tip # 1 Billion

Well ERIC!!!! :(

I AM OFFENDED!….. (ha)…

Brave man, I call this approach the “two footed challenge”….

I agree and disagree…. Personally I started with PPC, got burnt, then studied free marketing. Started to make profit then “re-invested” that profit back into PPC, but I am a lot wiser this time round, and I am glad I am back.

I still think Free marketing is something that should never be left because we need to diversify our traffic sources and blogs can be great long term assets.

I would actually advise new marketers to start with Free traffic and then re-invest that profit into PPC as many newbies simply don’t have the cash flow from day one.

When you can actually make profit with PPC it is nice because, as you quite rightly say, 1 hour a day, if that, job done!

One other thing before this turns out to be a 500 word article… :) Outsourcing your “Free” content, in my opinion, is the way forward, once you are in profit to keep your time and still get the benefit of SEO.

Nice post brother, I look forward to other peoples responses.

Hey Eric,

You bring up multiple great points!

Now, the reason why most won’t dwell into PPC is because they just finish spending quite a bit of money on programs teaching them on how to get a blog going or spent the money having someone else develop the blog for them.

Therefore, most likely don’t have enough money to even purchase a program about PPC. Which I do think is crazy not to dwell into PPC. Like you said it’s laser targeted traffic coming to your capture page to sell an affiliate’s product if you don’t have one.

Chat with you later…

Hey Wayne,
I can see your points, but most people are going to spend money on courses (more than one) hoping to find the answer to jumpstarting their businesses. The quickest start is to turn on the traffic, PPC. I have people that I work with that spend as little as $10/ day and are getting 2-3 leads/ day and more than covering their expenses after only having their campaigns up and running for a couple weeks. Getting a good PPC course and only focusing on that strategy until you get a comfort level is the way to go about getting started. There are so many different things people can get distracted by when getting started and distraction is one of the biggest down falls in most people’s PPC efforts if they are brand new. If they would take the time and only focus on one thing and get proficient, the outcome would be 10x better.

Hi Eric,

I know you’ve been on a bit of a “hiatus” (probably busy with PPC Ha!)

Anyway, you didn’t disappoint — controversy out the gate!

But you must have read my mind — I completely agree with you and I even wrote a similar post today.

My thing is, learn a strategy that will get you traffic RIGHT AWAY…

*There is a caveat, though — make sure you have an effective sales funnel set up so you can cover your advertising costs.

Eric April 28, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Not trying to be controversial just letting people know that there is a way for them to be successful quickly once they get started. I totally agree with having to have a sales funnel together that works to break even or make money. Anyone wanting to get started with PPC should look at PPC Domination. It takes you through the process of building an effective sales funnel before ever talking about setting up the first campaign.

As a matter of fact, if people need a product to promote to build their list, they can get a copy of your newly released “Cashflow Marketer” and get set up as an affiliate and use your sales funnel to build their lists. I have personally been through it and it is worth its weight in gold!

Thanks for stopping by,
Eric

Hey Eric,

I guess I’m doing the opposite of what you’re suggesting here as I’ve yet to explore the PPC arena.

I have been getting some good SEO leads from blogging without PPC. However, I do concur with what you’re saying about wasting time on forums and Facebook and all that marketing hype about generating gazillions of leads every day.

PPC is definitely on the agenda for me and I have got PPC Domination and I highly recommend it. It’s great info.

Thanks Eric,

That was really cool of you to say!

Chris Owen April 29, 2010 at 10:48 am

Ha, you are going to have to walk outside with a metal umbrella for a while.

I have a suggestion for everyone. Instead of spending $2,000 over the next year on courses teaching ways to get free traffic (lord knows I have), spend that $2 grand at once on Jim Yaghi’s new program and have him set it up for you.

Run the campaign on $200 a month until you get going with sales, and never buy a beginner course on free leads through twitter again.

Don’t worry Eric, now some of the stones aimed at you are gonna hit me.

This is a real eye opener when you put it like this.

I have cut down on some of that wasteful time you mention.

Put my time effort into keyword strategies, trying to learn more about SEO and start putting some PPC campagins together.
Thanks for the good info that others don’t really touch on.

Yea, I have been dodging bullets lately. I didn’t think telling the truth about getting started quickly and efficiently would draw so much commotion. I guess the truth hurts.

Thanks for stopping by,
Eric

Major benefit here…

Well said! Other strategies may work for some people but the minute they start sharing it with the masses, it’s like being a captain of sinking boat. There’s just no hope. So, picking up a good PPC course and sticking to what is learned can provide some big gains.

Thanks for telling it like it is.

Better put your flame suit on Eric… haha

I agree completely, “Free” is one of the most over used and miss-understood words out there.

Time isn’t free. And with most free strats your trading time for leads.

Thanks for sayin it how it is,
Matt
