For all of you would be entrepreneurs out there, there is only one answer to this question and it’s HELL NO!!!! Take it from a multiple small business owner that attaining success in an MLM will be a thousand times easier than if you were to start a small business. I have owned businesses on and off for the last 9 years (6 at one time: 100 employees: 8 Million a year) and what has lead me to the MLM industry is the freedoms of owning your own business without all of the B.S.
Ask Jason Better About Entitlement
Employees are the single largest reason that I am choosing to move away from traditional business. There was a post on Jason Better yesterday about the sense of entitlement among people. When we were running all those businesses and had all of those employees, it seemed like a revolving door in the HR department because of the sense of entitlement these people have. They are happy for a week until they see someone half their age getting paid more money. Hello, obviously they are providing more to the company than you. Seniority doesn’t mean jack in a small business. Perform your job plus one and then grow the cahones to ask for more money. Guess What? Syanora To Employees!
Hey It’s Awesome, We Just Made $8 Million!
Oh wait, how much does Uncle Sam get of that? (LOUD GASP) You mean we worked our rears off to have to give nearly 40% of it back to the state and Uncle Sam? I thought we already were paid up on all our taxes? Yea, payroll taxes! Well, how many different taxes are their? Depending on your corporate structure their can be 3 tax levels by the time you finally get any money. You still have to pay taxes on your earnings from a home business, but you have a lot more deductions and don’t have to pay payroll taxes, health insurance, and (insert here any number of other expenses associated with a traditional business)!
Wow, I Just Found A Super Niche, But It’s Going To Take A 1 Million Dollar Investment
And that’s just for starters. The initial investment doesn’t include the labor, inventory, additional insurances, additional taxes, and the not to mention the heap of money needed to start marketing the business to be successful. Man, the business numbers really looked great on paper, but is it worth a couple million dollar investment (this should read “potential risk”) for that kind of return? For all you out there that have had the opportunity to ask yourselves that question (maybe not on the dollar scale), let me give you the simple answer, Not Just NO, but Hell NO.
Not A Rant For Rants Sake
Okay, you guys are all probably thinking who the heck is the raving lunatic. What qualifies him to tell me not to chase my dreams? My answer is, I am not telling you not to chase your dreams, I am telling you that you really need to weigh all of the factors that you will be facing starting a small business. It’s great to be a tradesman in your business, but that doesn’t mean you have any business skill or sense! Their is a reason why most small businesses fail in the first four years: people starting the business are great technicians, but poor business people.
Is There Any Good News To This?
Their sure is some great news. You want to own a business with all of the good of a small business (time freedom, more money, etc.) with very few drawbacks, look to an MLM business. I could go on and on about the negatives of a traditional small business, but I hope I got my point across. Can you achieve success in an MLM? Absolutely. Will it be easy? Nothing worth havinng is easy, but starting yourself out in the correct playing field is THE most important thing you can do to get going in the right direction for success.

Hey Eric,
Some impressive traditional business numbers there. I understand your challenges or “gripes” with traditional business. I have been involved in Real Estate for quite a few years now, and the issues you have with tenants can be a pain in the rear.
What I love about home based business, is you can run a large or small empire comfortably at home without the other attached problems of traditional business. Obviously there are still problems, but I am happier this way.
Great post, and congrats on the new style by the way!
Hey Eric,
Thanks for the shout-out, man!
I’m loving the rant — it’s obvious you have a passion for the home business industry and you have some clear reasons for this.
I’ve never had employees (I’ve always had sales jobs) and I can honestly say that I’ve never wanted them, either.
My wife is my business partner and that’s been great — and the cool part is we can outsource the rest.
P.S. I’m liking the new style
Hey Eric,
I know where you are coming from. I as well come from owning a small business and I tell you owning a business in network marketing is by far, less stressful!
Great look on the post!
Josh
There is something to be said for someone who has never done anything but own a small business dissing it so bad.
Thanks for the copywriting advice,
Eric
So TRUE Eric.
It’s like I’m programmed to being a small business owner and I’ll tell you, it’s the most rewarding experience I have ever had within my profession.

Hey Eric,
Been there done that, will never go back. Maybe I shouldn’t say never. But running a small business means you have to depend on your employees to make the impression for you sometimes. You guys think getting good downline members is hard. In small business, the public judges you on your downline.
Offline small businesses have too many risks, too little rewards, and too many legalities. Imagine being sued because one of your downline got carpal tunnel syndrome.
Give me a laptop and some time freedom any day. Network Marketing Rocks!
