Evaluating an MLM Opportunity – Protect Your Money and Your Time With These Tips

by Eric on February 13, 2010

Most people have been approached with an MLM opportunity at some point during their lives. While many multilevel marketing companies are a great investment for your future, there are some opportunities which are either outright scams or won’t work in the long-term. One of the biggest mistakes is signing up for an MLM which allows members at the top to build their profits on the backs of members at the bottom without ever really helping those at the bottom move upward. Therefore, it is very important to learn how to evaluate an MLM opportunity the right way so that you don’t get taken and you put your time and money into something that will pay you back.

One of the first things you want to look at when you’re evaluating an MLM company is its history. Of course, there are new companies that start every year and getting in on the ground floor is often a great opportunity. However, without having any historical information it can be hard to figure out whether or not that company will be successful. That’s okay if you’re a person who likes to take risks, but never put more into the company than you’re willing to lose.

You also want to make sure that you choose a company which has products that will sell outside of the network itself. In other words, you want a good consumer base which will purchase the product and are not simply interested in joining the business.

You also want to make sure that you fully understand the commission plan being offered by the MLM company. Often, these commission plans and tiers can be very hard to understand so you want to make sure that you thoroughly read over the commission plan and ask questions if you are unclear on any part of it. After all, this would be your future career and business so it is very important that you focus heavily on understanding how you will be paid.

One of the most important things to evaluate when you’re looking at an MLM opportunity is what kind of training you will receive. Obviously, a company which provides a substantial amount of quality training is going to allow you to stand head and shoulders above other business owners. This is probably one of the most important parts of the whole MLM process because it really doesn’t matter what the commission plan is if you can’t make any money due to no training.

If the MLM company does have a history of being in business for several years, ask about their financial stability and see what kind of information you can gather related to it. Remember, you are not only investing your hard earned money but also your time, so you want to make sure that you fully understand the company that you’re about to associate yourself with. Not every MLM opportunity is going to pan out, so take your time to choose the right one for you.
