Scanning The Market – With PPC Guru Jim Yaghi

by Eric on April 5, 2010

That was one of the first things I asked one of my business partners, Jim Yaghi.  He proceeded to take me through one of the most tedious and painful keyword discovery processes in the world.  I remember wondering if the process would ever end.  Finally, it did and we ended up with over 60,000 keywords to start a PPC campaign on my RealEstateStinks.com project.

In the process, we came up with some awesome long tail keywords that I had no idea would ever have existed.  It also gave me an up close and personal look at real time searches being done by people on the interweb right now.  I thought forums were a great way to get your finger on the pulse of your market, try going through 60k of keywords and you will have a pretty darn good idea of what they are searching for and needing.

Here is a video of Jim and I talking about how big of a pain in the rear his “Scanning The Market” technique is, but also how vital it is to getting started with a good PPC campaign and zeroing in on lazer targeted money keywords.  In the general sense, the STM technique is the equivalent of casting a net over the whole market you are going after in order to find the best keywords through PPC.

Are you “Scanning Your Market” or are you missing out on some of the most important research you can do for your business? You don’t have to be me (or Jim) to do this exercise, just as long as you do it.

If you really liked it, head over to and Vote on it for me.

Thanks,
Eric
